Your meetings are yours. Here's exactly how we handle your data.
Last updated: July 17, 2026
TL;DR: MeeLang sends meeting contents to our translation backend for AI-powered translation. We don't store your meeting content — captions are processed in memory and kept locally for management. We only record anonymous usage metrics (character count and translation duration) for service monitoring.
1. What MeeLang Does
MeeLang is a Chrome extension that provides real-time AI-powered translation subtitles for your online meetings. It reads captions from meeting platforms like Google Meet and sends them to our translation backend, which translates them using LLM and returns the results as floating subtitles in your browser.
2. Data We Collect
2.1 Extension Settings
We store your preferences — such as target language, caption source, font size, and overlay position — in Chrome's local and sync storage. These are simple configuration values and contain no meeting content. Synced settings let you keep the same preferences across devices when you're signed into Chrome.
2.2 Meeting Content
MeeLang reads content directly from the meeting tab you're viewing. Meeting content is sent to our translation backend for processing. The backend does not store your meeting content — it processes them in memory for translation and discards them immediately after the translation is returned.
Meeting content is kept locally in your own browser for management, such as search, filter, and export meeting contents.
2.3 Anonymous Usage Metrics
To help us understand service load and maintain quality, our backend records anonymous usage statistics:
- Content length: The total number of characters sent for translation.
- Translation duration: How long the translation service was actively processing.
These metrics contain no meeting content or personally identifiable information. They are used solely for operational monitoring and quota management.
2.4 Authentication Data
If you sign in with Google, we use Chrome's identity API to obtain an OAuth token. This token is stored in Chrome's local storage and sent to our backend for session verification. We do not collect or store your Google account password.
3. How Your Data Is Used
- Translation: Caption text is sent from the extension to our backend, which forwards it to our AI translation service
- Usage monitoring: Anonymous character count and duration metrics are aggregated to track overall service usage. This helps us ensure the service remains reliable and within operational limits.
- Session management: Your Google OAuth token identifies you to our backend for session continuity.
- Preferences: Settings in Chrome storage control how the extension behaves. Synced settings are transmitted by Chrome's built-in sync mechanism (encrypted in transit and at rest by Google).
4. Third-Party Services
MeeLang integrates with third-party AI translation providers. When you use our translation services:
- Caption text is forwarded from our backend to the provider's API for translation.
- Each provider has its own privacy policy governing how it handles the data you send.
5. Data Storage & Retention
Our translation backend processes content in memory and does not persist raw content. The only data the backend retains are anonymous usage metrics: total character count and translation duration — never the content itself.
Meeting transcripts and translation history are stored locally in your browser by the extension for your reference via the Meeting Memory feature. You control this data entirely — you can view, search, export, or delete it at any time.
6. Permissions We Request
When you install MeeLang, Chrome will show these permission requests and why we need them:
6.1 Extension Permissions
- activeTab: To read captions from your current meeting tab when you activate the extension.
- storage: To save your preferences locally and optionally sync them across your devices.
- identity: To support Google sign-in for session management (optional).
6.2 Host Permissions
- meet.google.com: To detect meeting sessions and read captions from Google Meet.
- accounts.google.com: To complete the Google OAuth sign-in flow.
We request the minimum permissions necessary for the extension to function. We do not track your browsing history or collect analytics beyond the anonymous usage metrics described above.
7. Your Control
- Translation toggle: You can turn translation on or off at any time from the extension popup. When off, no captions are processed.
- Delete meeting data: You can delete individual meeting records or clear all data from the Meeting Memory page.
- Sign out: Signing out of Google removes your OAuth token from local storage.
- Uninstall: Removing the extension from Chrome deletes all locally stored extension data.
8. Children's Privacy
MeeLang is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
